Barbara Harneiss, of Picton, was on the Aratere's 10am sailing to Wellington yesterday for a doctor's appointment when the theft happened.

Ms Harneiss, who is blind in her right eye and has tunnel vision in her left, said she placed her handbag under her seat after she was guided there by a ferry worker.

"The first thing I knew of it being stolen was when my name was called out over the loudspeaker."

Another passenger found the handbag in the non waterproof flexible led strips women's toilets -- minus the purse, which held the cash, a return ticket to Picton and an eftpos card.

Ms Harneiss said she had got the cash out to pay her rent at a bank in Wellington. She was to stay at the Suzanne Aubert Compassion Centre in Wellington last night because it was her only option.

"I've got nothing now. WINZ can't help me, because I've already got my payment. The bank gave me a $30 overdraft, but that's not going to last two weeks."

She thought it was almost unbelievable that someone could be so cold.

Interislander general
embroidered patches manager of passenger services Martin Weekes said the company had refunded the cost of Ms Harneiss' return trip.

The ship's manager had also contacted the bank, arranged for a temporary eftpos card for the woman and given her a taxi voucher, he said.
