WITH his receding hair, passion for golf and truly appalling taste in knitwear, 51-year-old Kevin Costner appears respectable to the point of nerdishness.
He has been married twice, which by Hollywood standards is modest, and his latest bride, a model turned handbag designer, has been his consort since 1999, which (again by Hollywood standards) makes him appear monogamous.
For all this, though, it would be a considerable understatement to describe his love life as 'colourful'.
In fact, the actor - who is accused of exposing himself to a masseuse while honeymooning at the Old Course Hotel in St Andrews, Fife - has an extraordinary sexual history.
Stainless BraceletsIt includes fathering a child whose existence he acknowledged only after a DNA test, a liaison in Hawaii with a hula girl, an appearance in a soft porn movie and even, some claim, an entanglement with the late Princess of Wales.
Oh, and then there were allegations of threats involving three blondes and a videotape. Plus a court case involving a wealthy wife, a jealous husband, Prince Andrew and a spot of entrapment. And a list of lovers that reads like a roll call of the world's most beautiful women.
No wonder Costner has been dubbed 'King of the One Night Stands'.
None of this, of course, means he is guilty of performing a 'disgusting' sex act at the Old Course Hotel in 2004. It is hard to believe any man would indulge in such behaviour on his honeymoon.
During his 25 years of fame, Costner has amassed a treasure trove of sex scandals. 'For me, women are like a drug,' he has said. 'I like them all.'
That is an attitude which helped to destroy his first marriage, to his college sweetheart Cindy Silva. They met in 1975 when Costner was in his final year at California State University, and married three years later.
Costner tried a succession of jobs - truck driver, deckhand, carpenter - before settling on acting.
His first role was in a soft porn film, Malibu Hot Summer, which traded on his beefcake good looks and required full frontal nudity.
COSTNER struggled to make the big time and took on labouring jobs to pay the rent.
His first child, Annie, now 22, was followed by the births of Lily, 20, and Joe, 18.
Then, in 1987, Costner got his big break with a starring role in the gangster film The Untouchables, kickstarting a career that peaked with the seven-times Oscar-winning film Dances With Wolves, which he directed and starred in.

And though the critics hated him - one said he had the onscreen presence of a paper cup - he was adored by women cinemagoers around the world. The strain on his marriage was inevitable.
'My wife is unlucky,' he said at the time. 'Living with a sex symbol is complicated. It is not easy for her to be at my side knowing I am the object of other women's desires.' The first serious Costner scandal erupted when he was filming Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves in Britain.
Sheri Stewart, a 27-year-old hostess at Stringfellows, spent a night with Costner, and sold a detailed account to a Sunday newspaper.
