Ineos refuses to be drawn on s

INEOS declined to comment on talk that a deal has been done that will result in a Chinese oil and gas giant acquiring the refinery at Grangemouth where much of the petrol used in Scotland is produced.

A source said PetroChina had struck a deal to buy the refinery at Grangemouth, which will give the state-owned firm control over the production of fuels like petrol and diesel.

The latest talk comes seven months after a report in The Herald prompted Ineos to confirm to community leaders that it was in discussions to sell at least part of the plant to state-owned PetroChina.

Asked to comment on the source's claims yesterday, a spokesman for the debt-laden replica breitling chemicals firm declined to give any update on the status of long-running talks about Grangemouth.

He referred to a statement in which Ineos had said:

"We are in discussions with interested parties about investment and growth opportunities at the Grangemouth refinery, however these remain commercially confidential and it would be premature to speculate on whether any discussions might lead to an investment in Grangemouth. The Grangemouth petrochemical and refining facility remains a strategic part of the Ineos Group (and) the company is committed to the long-term development of the site."

However, pressed on whether the talks might involve the sale of the refinery at Grangemouth, the spokesman said: "There are a number of options that we are exploring."

The comments do not appear to rule out the prospect of a deal with PetroChina
embroidered patches that could be politically explosive.

It might be possible for Ineos to sell the oil-refining operations at Grangemouth while retaining ownership of the chemicals processing facilities. These produce chemicals such as polyethylene which is used in packaging.

Selling the refinery on the Forth might allow Ineos to make a big impact on the huge debts it amassed to fund acquisitions. It bought the Innovene petrochemicals operation that owned Grangemouth from BP for pound(s)5bn in 2005.
