BANK Islam Malaysia Bhd, the country's oldest Islamic bank, plans to maintain its above-average profit levels this year and is keen on expanding abroad, particularly in Southeast Asia.

Managing director Datuk Seri Zukri Samat said countries like Indonesia would be attractive due to its huge population but he declined to say what sort of progress the lender has made.

"I think we know this place (Southeast Asia) better. It (a foreign acquisition) is still very much on our agenda," Zukri told Business Times in an interview.

Malaysian banks have been actively expanding abroad in recent years as they seek to expand further. These include markets with large populations like Indonesia, China and Pakistan.

However, stand-alone Islamic banks or the ones without a conventional banking parent such as Bank Islam and Bank Muamalat have yet to make their moves abroad.

Bank Islam has made acquisitions as one of its growth strategies in its new three-year plan Zenith Replica Watches that runs until the end of June 30 2012. This is now in place after three years of putting its house in order.

DRUNKEN Millwall fans went on a rampage after an Aston Villa youth game on Friday night, the Sunday Mercury can reveal.

Two men were injured and 13 were arrested following fighting outside the Aston Hotel.

One of the men, aged 41, suffered bruising, and the other, a 42-year-old man, suffered a cut to his head after being attacked with what officers believe was a bottle.

The attack was thought to be a racially aggravated assault, said police, who were called to Aston Lane at Wenlock Road, Aston, at 8.30pm.

One fan who witnessed the trouble said: "There was a distinct group of serious football hooligans in the ground who were making themselves known throughout the first half.
